A short 45 minute walk from Te Pukeatea leads to Pitt Head, an ancient Maori Pa. Pa sites are iconic in New Zealand heritage. Maori technology developed trenches which modernised modern warfare in WW1. Today the trenches are still visible when you walk over the bridge on this section of track. The site has panoramic views up into the Northern part of the park and towards the North Island. Pa sites were strategically important to Maori defences.
