  • Your skipper will stop at Tonga or Pinnacle Island to view the seals after picking you up at Onetahuti

  • At Tonga Quarry you can see still remnants of the quarry and see leftover drilled slabs of granite

  • This section of track is considered the most picturesque section of the park

Aqua Taxi to Torrent Bay, walk to Onetahuti Beach 14km (3.5hrs) and meet the Aqua Taxi again. Return to Marahau/Kaiteriteri via the Seal Colony.

Seals and Sand Journey

  • 1 Aqua Taxi from Marahau & Kaiteriteri to Torrent Bay


    You will pass several off-shore islands which provide a protected habitat for native wildlife. This stretch of water is called the Astrolabe Roadstead named by Dumont Durville. Roadstead was a term early seafarers used to describe safe sheltered waters.

  • 2 Walk from Torrent Bay to Bark Bay


    The section of track between Bark Bay & Torrent Bay is the most walked on this coast. From Bark Bay to Torrent Bay takes about 2.5 hrs and is 7.8kms. This section has some beautiful stands of large trees including Rimu, Totara and Rata. You pass through Torrent Bay settlement, this is the largest public settlement in the Park, it is mostly holiday homes.

  • 3 Walk from Bark Bay to Onetahuti


    The walk between Bark Bay and Onetahuti Beach will take about 2 hrs and is 6.1kms in length. Bark Bay got its name from the time when trees there were originally stripped of their bark to be used in a Nelson tannery. Onetahuti Beach looks out across Tonga Bay. Tonga is the Maori word for south and is also the name of the Marine Reserve; the third in New Zealand to be next to a national park.

  • 4 Aqua Taxi from Onetahuti to Bark Bay


    You are entering the middle of the Tonga Island Marine Reserve. You will see Tonga Island prominent in the distance which has one of the largest seal populations in the park. All of our boats hold a marine mammal viewing permit - so we can view all marine life from a distance of 20 metres. We stop at Tonga or Pinnacle Island and spend time viewing the seals

  • 5 Aqua Taxi from Bark Bay to Anchorage


    This stretch of coastline can only be viewed from the water. You will see lots of interesting rocky outcrops and rock formations. Sandfly Bay and Falls River are beautiful spots. On a high tide (and time dependent) you can go up Falls River and see the people walking across the Swing Bridge.

  • 6 Aqua Taxi return journey from Anchorage to Marahau & Kaiteriteri
