  • Your skipper will stop at Tonga Island to view the seals before dropping you off at Onetahuti

  • At Tonga Quarry you can see still remnants of the quarry and see leftover drilled slabs of granite

  • The track crosses the only swing bridge in the park - 47 m in length - Falls River Swing Bridge

  • This section of track is considered the most picturesque section of the park

Boat to Onetahuti Bay via the seal colony, walk to Anchorage (4.5 hrs) or Torrent Bay (3.5hrs/by prior arrangement) to meet the boat again.

Guided Walk Option

A guided walk can be combined with the Slice of Paradise, Beaches and Bays or walk the first section of the Seals and Sand trip and meet your guide at 12:45pm at Medlands beach. Hear fascinating stories of Maori and European settlers and the natural history of this picturesque area.

Guided walk approx 2 hrs. Minimum numbers apply. From 1st May - 30 Sept only the Slice of Paradise can be combined with the walk.

Seals and Sand Journey

The Seals and Sand trip is comprised of 6 legs.

  • 1 Aqua Taxi from Marahau & Kaiteriteri to Torrent & Anchorage Bay

    You will pass several off-shore islands which provide a protected habitat for native wildlife. This stretch of water is called the Astrolabe Roadstead named by Dumont Durville. Roadstead was a term early seafarers used to describe safe sheltered waters. Heading North watch out for the Anchorage navigational marker before you turn in and see the beautiful expanse of Anchorage and Torrent Bay ahead of you.

  • 2 Aqua Taxi from Torrent & Anchorage Bay to Bark Bay

    This stretch of coastline can only be viewed from the water. You will see lots of interesting rocky outcrops and rock formations. Sandfly Bay and Falls River are beautiful spots. On a high tide (and time dependent) you can go up Falls River and see the people walking across the Swing Bridge.

  • 3 Aqua Taxi from Bark Bay to Tonga

    You enter the start of theTonga Island Marine Reserve as you exit Bark Bay heading North. You will see Tonga Island prominent in the distance which has the largest Seal population in the park. All of our boats hold a marine mammal viewing permit - so we can view all marine life from a distance of 20 metres. We stop at Tonga Island and spend time viewing the seals.

  • 4 Walk from Tonga to Bark Bay

    To walk from Bark Bay to Onetahuti will take about 2.0 hrs and is 6.1kms in length. Bark was stripped from trees to be used in a nelson tannery, hence the origin of the name of the bay. Tonga means south and is also the name of the Marine Reserve the third in New Zealand to be alongside a national park.

  • 5 Walk from Bark Bay to Torrent & Anchorage Bay

    This section of track between Torrent and Bark Bay is the most walked on this coast and takes about 3 hrs and is 7.8kms. It has some beautiful stands of large trees including Rimu, Totara and Rata. Torrent Bay settlement is the largest public settlement in the Park, it is mostly holiday homes.
